Duties: | | Identifies required process control; develops process controls and interlock requirements with the Process Engineer; chooses the correct measurement technology for the application; controls loop design; sizes process instruments and final control elements; provides instrument engineering input to the P&ID drawings; coordinates instrumentation with the Controls Engineer; assures compatibility between instruments and PLC/DCS control systems; details design of instrument applications; makes instrument materials selections the are compatible with process chemistry; assures instrument materials are compatible for ambient environment and corrosion conditions; produces instrument data sheets; creates and develops electrical controls and interlocks as related to overall control; provides all instrument information needed for piping design including flow meters, control valves, temperature measurement devices, on-off valves, level measurement instruments and process analytical instruments; advises and recommends controls and instruments for major mechanical equipment; provides instrumentation power ad signal information required for electrical design; selects instruments to meet hazardous and non hazardous electrical classification; coordinates and verifies instrument signal compatibility between major mechanical equipment and PLC/DCS systems; assures that all instrumentation and controls documentation is correct, adequate, and provides and operable system to the client. | Qualifications: | | A technical degree in instrumentation and a minimum of four years experience in instrumentation. Work experience must be with projects in the heavy industrial industry (power, petrochemical, mining, etc...).
Must have a broad knowledge base for instrumentation including understanding many processes, electrical wiring, electrical interlocks, piping and piping materials, instrument connections to piping system and the principles and methods of control, PID, ratio, batching and continuous analog. Must know the manufacturers and vendors that supply instrumentation and know the best instrument to use for the application and what technology is best applied to the specific application. Requires a math skill level for the sizing of electrical circuits and components, fluid flow calculations for sizing flow meters and control valves. Must be proficient in the use of Word, Excel, Access, Outlook and specialized programs like InstruCalc and vendor software for specific devices, e.g. flow meters, orifice plate sizing, control valve sizing, etc.
